Journal No. 2

Walking back through that same front door felt strangely familiar.

Only a few weeks earlier, I had arrived hoping to secure a part-time housekeeping job. Instead, I had unexpectedly become the company’s bookkeeper. Now, after completing the accounts ahead of schedule and with the housekeeper becoming increasingly unreliable, I found myself returning to the very role I had originally applied for.

Funny how life works.

I mainly worked during the day, I usually only saw the three teenagers when they returned home from school. They were always polite, respectful and pleasant.

The house itself was beautiful, and it was obvious the children were well cared for and wanted for nothing. So I concentrated on my work. The more time I spent there, the more I began to understand the daily challenges he quietly faced.

Only then did I discover he had survived a life-threatening car accident.

The accident had left him with significant mobility challenges, yet what impressed me most wasn’t what had happened to him—it was how he chose to live afterwards.

Despite everything he had endured, he remained intelligent, thoughtful and quietly determined.

I admired that enormously.

Because some physical tasks had become difficult, not everyone employed appreciated the responsibility they had been given. Some treated the job as just another shift, while others lacked pride in their work.

It saddened me. Not because the work wasn’t getting done, but because I knew he deserved better.

Watching this stirred something inside me. I simply wanted him to experience the professionalism, reliability and respect every employer deserves. That’s just how I was brought up.

If someone places their trust in you, you honour that trust by doing your very best.

At the time, I had no idea those ordinary days – simply turning up, working hard and doing my job well – were quietly building something neither of us expected. Trust.

And as I would soon discover, trust has a remarkable way of changing everything.
